Titel: Enriched Sioux Falls Scenario with Dynamic and Disaggregate Demand
Kurzbeschreibung: This paper presents an enriched, agent-based small scale scenario with dynamic demand and an integrated public transport system based on the commonly used Sioux Falls road network. The scenario aims to provide a realistic, fully dynamic demand with heterogeneous socio- demographic users and a high degree of spatial resolution. Real world survey and land-use data is used to generate a diverse synthetic population and accurate activity locations. The socio-demographic characteristics include age and sex on individual and income on household levels. The assignment of home and work locations employs land-use and building information, census data from the City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota as well as commonly used static OD-matrices from LeBlanc et al., 1975. This enriched Sioux Falls scenario can serve as a convenient test-case for the study of different transportation policies as well as a test bed for the extension and development of agent-based simulation frameworks. It is important to note that the scenario does not aim to replicate the real City of Sioux Falls, SD, and remains a fictitious test-case scenario. In this work, we use Multi-agent Transport Simulation (MATSim) in order to evaluate the stochastic user-equilibrium of the compiled supply and demand. The scenario data, as well as simulations input and output, can be obtained by following the instructions at www.matsim.org/scenario/sioux-falls.2

Titel: Reconstructing bus vehicle trajectories from transit smart-card data
Kurzbeschreibung: Transit smart card automated fare collection systems are becoming increasingly prevalent in cities across the world. Trajectory reconstruction from smart card data includes constructing passenger trajectories or flows (Itoh et al., 2013; Yang et al., 2013; Yuan et al., 2013) or train trajectory reconstruction through regression analysis (Sun et al., 2012). It appears that no work has been done so far to reconstruct the detail trajectories of bus vehicles from these data. In this work, bus vehicle trajectories have been (approximately) reconstructed from a full day of smart card transactions in Singapore, from a mid-April Wednesday, 2013. The trajectories were recorded in a format compliant with the output from the agent-based simulation system, MATSim (www.matsim.org), using the specifications developed by (Rieser, 2010). This makes visualisation and analysis possible in compliant software, such as Senozon Via (http://senozon.com/products/via). A significant application of the resulting trajectory data is for the construction of realistic meta-models of travel time between transit stops during the course of the day in a fast pseudo-simulation (Fourie et al., 2013), as well as to route agents using realistic travel times in a dynamic transit router (Ordóñez Medina and Erath, 2013).

Titel: Synthetic population generation by combining a hierarchical, simulation-based approach with reweighting by generalized raking
Kurzbeschreibung: We extend a recent approach of generating populations of synthetic individuals through simula- tion, to produce households of grouped individuals. The contingency tables of the generated populations match external controls both on individual and household level, while exhibiting far greater variety in composition than what existing approaches can offer. Our method involves a two-staged approach: 1. A procedure based upon Gibbs sampling which has only recently been applied to popula- tion generation in transportation modeling, and is generically called Markov Chain Monte Carlo. For this work, an extension was developed, Hierarchical MCMC, which is able to generate a hierarchical structure. 2. A post-processing step using Generalized Raking, which reweights the output from Hier- archical MCMC in order to perfectly satisfy known marginal control totals on individual and household level. The application input data a demographic sample and some known marginals from the country of Singapore added further complexities to the problem, which have not yet been explored in the current literature. Despite data challenges, applying the methods above consecutively produces realistic synthetic populations: results confirm the goodness-of-fit of the population and its generated hierarchical structure.2

Kurzbeschreibung: The Multi-Agent Transport Simulation toolkit, MATSim, employs a trial-and-error evolution- inspired approach, by executing and scoring agent day plans in a time-consuming traffic sim- ulation. This paper introduces an information feedback loop to the MATSim framework that evaluates and improves plans before they are executed. We test the technique in an extensive scenario for Zurich, Switzerland, incorporating mode choice, road-pricing, secondary activity location choice, activity timing adjustment and dynamic routing. We find that the technique dramatically improves convergence rates for such complex, large-scale simulations, and fully exploits modern multi-core computer architectures. Its simple operational logic promises easy integration with all existing and upcoming MATSim functionality, and opens the door to more sophisticated approaches to large-scale, integrated transportation planning.

Titel: Increased convergence rates in multiagent transport simulations with pseudosimulation
Kurzbeschreibung: In this paper, we introduce a multi-model approach to a large-scale, activity-based, multi-agent travel demand simulation. The Multi-Agent Transport Simulation toolkit, MATSim, is a full activity-based travel demand model, capable of handling very large urban scenarios in the order of millions of commuters. Its greatest current performance limitation is the network loading simulation, currently a queue simulation (`QSim'). In our application, the multi-model system periodically replaces the current QSim for a number of iterations with a simplified pseudo-simulation (`PSim') that runs approximately two orders of magnitude faster. PSim uses information generated in the preceding QSim iteration to produce an estimate of how well an agent day plan might perform, which allows the existing model framework to select and improve plans before executing them in a full queue simulation. We test the technique in an extensive scenario for Zurich, Switzerland, incorporating mode choice, road-pricing, secondary activity location choice, activity timing adjustment and dynamic routing. We find that the technique dramatically improves convergence rates for such complex, large-scale simulations, and fully exploits modern multi-core computer architectures. Its simple operational logic promises easy integration with all existing and upcoming MATSim functionality, and opens the door to more sophisticated approaches to large-scale, integrated transportation planning.

QSim is iteratively executed for the entire agent population for evaluating the effects of random mutations on the activity plans of a fraction of the population. After each QSim, poorly performing plans are discarded, good plans are kept, and the agents slowly learn what works best for their individual activity needs. In the application presented, the system periodically replaces QSim for a number of iterations with a simplified pseudosimulation that runs approximately two orders of magnitude faster. The pseudosimulation uses travel time information from the preceding QSim iteration to estimate how well an agent day plan might perform. Repeated iterations of the pseudosimulation produce better-performing plans in a short time. These plans are passed to the QSim for updating of network travel time information, and the process repeats. The technique is tested in a scenario for Zurich, Switzerland, and incorporates mode choice, road pricing, secondary activity location choice, activity timing adjustment, and dynamic routing. The technique dramatically improves convergence rates for such complex, large-scale simulations and fully exploits modern multicore computer architectures

Untertitel: From research to practice
Kurzbeschreibung: With the progress in transport demand modelling from aggregated, static and zone-based assignment models to fully dynamic agent- and activity-based transport simulations, the scope of data that needs to be collected, managed and maintained has changed dramatically. Furthermore, the type of analyses as well as potential analysts have changed. Whereas traditionally transport modelers would analyze data and create static maps, pre-defined graphs and tables we envision other end-users: transport authorities, architects, policy-makers and the service industry. These analysts can utilize a decision-support tool, based on the output of an agent-based model as well as analyze their own datasets and fully analyze spatial and temporal agent behavior without requiring continuous support from a transport modeler. In this paper, we present a framework of a decision support system designed to enable analysis of the wealth of information provided by agent-based transport demand models, travel diary surveys and automatically collected data on transport infrastructure usage. We present a practical application of the framework using it for analyzing the MATSim model of Singapore along with the Household Interview Travel Survey and public transport smart card transaction data. At the time of writing, the status of presented applications is only preliminary as not all necessary dataset and interfaces are yet fully developed, but the presented case-studies give already a very good idea about the potential scope and functioning of the decision support system. For future work, we envisage stakeholder workshops to better understand their diverse requirements and jointly refine what type of questions the decision support system should support to answer and adapt it accordingly.

Titel: Towards a comprehensive agent-based simulation framework incorporating joint activity-scheduling and ride-sharing within households
Kurzbeschreibung: Ride-sharing within households as the result of joint activity scheduling poses a challenging problem in transport demand modelling. This phenomenon is becoming increasingly important in environments such as Singapore, where extensive demand-management policies are implemented. Various aspects of the problem have been addressed in isolation, but an integrated approach to full household activity schedule-based travel demand modelling including ride-sharing, with the aim of providing predictive capabilities for policy testing, remains elusive. In this paper, a framework is proposed for this capability to be integrated into the existing MATSim agent- based transport simulation system. Particular attention is paid to a possible hybrid simulation scheme, that could possibly allow a departure from complex, integrated meta-heuristic re- planning modules to simpler, atomistic modules that are easier to maintain. Such a simulation would then rely on long simulation runs for stable and realistic household activity patterns to emerge. The paper concludes with suggestions of possible atomistic re-planning modules that could be used in the incremental development of a full model of intra-household activity coordination.2

Titel: Multi-Level Weighting of Travel Survey Results
Kurzbeschreibung: We apply multi-level iterative proportional fitting (IPF) procedures to the problem of inflating travel survey data to simultaneously match control totals in two domains, using the Singaporean Household Interview Travel Survey (HITS) of 2008 as a case in point. In this survey, household trip records need to be inflated to match household control totals that come from census-based sources, and trip control totals coming from observed traffic counts and transit smart card data. Currently HITS uses a two-step procedure to address this problem, producing separate household and trip inflation factors to match externally generated controls. We adapt two recently developed multi-level techniques, namely Iterative Proportional Updating and Hierarchical IPF, to the particular requirements of our case. We compare results with respect to accuracy, bias and algorithm performance, followed by a set of descriptive statistics characterising personal trip-making that illustrate the benefit of using a multi- level approach.

Titel: Large-Scale Agent-Based Combined Traffic Simulation of Private Cars and Commercial Vehicles
Kurzbeschreibung: The number of independent and interdependent freight actors (firms), the complex supply chain structures between them, and the sensitivity of shipment data are some reasons that the modeling of freight traffic is lagging its public and private transit counterparts. An agent-based approach was used to reconstruct commercial activity chains and simulate them, along with private vehicles, for a large-scale scenario in Gauteng, South Africa. The simulated activities were compared with the actual observed activities of 5,196 vehicles that were inferred from Global Positioning System logs covering approximately 6 months. The results show that the reconstructed activity chains are both spatially and temporally accurate, especially in areas of high activity density. Freight vehicles are a major contributor to traffic congestion and emissions, and the new approach bridges the gap between the person and the state of the art in commercial transport modeling.
