Titel: A multiscale classification of the urban morphology
Kurzbeschreibung: Various studies in the field of Urban Planning and Design have given recommendations on "good urban forms", imposing that specific spatial characteristics inform the quality of an urban landscape and the way persons perceive this one, respectively behave in this one. When modeling spatial behavior in form of location choice models or hedonic prices we should reflect these spatial characteristics though integration of quantitative attributes as model variables, which is currently only done in a very limited way. The increasing availability of disaggregated geodata enlarges the options to characterize the urban morphology in form of such attributes. The question for the researcher remains which attributes are useful to reflect characteristics of the urban morphology and how these can be processed from the given data. In this paper we want to address this issue and give an overview of quantitative descriptions of the urban morphology. We base our work on a data model that is simple enough to allow for reproducibility on any study area. These attributes are classified in multiple scales to reflect different perceptions of the urban morphology. In a case study on the canton of Zurich we furthermore prove how these characteristics allow for definition of urban typologies in different scales.2

Titel: Classification of the Urban Morphology for Use in Residential Location Choice Models
Kurzbeschreibung: Geo-spatial data available to researchers and practitioners has increased substantially over the last decades, forming new opportunities of analyzing and characterizing locations and their spatial environment in an objective way. Such descriptives also allow for use in discrete locations choice models which model relocation behavior and generally implement three groups of variables, representing attributes of the alternative, the decision-taker and the location. With the growing availability of spatial data on a disaggregated level, a large number of location variables have been reported in these models, which reduces their comparability and their transferability to other study areas.
Residential location choice models are a well-known example of such location choice models often reported by researchers. In this thesis a wide range of these studies is reviewed in order to propose a common classification for location variables and categorizes their findings. Similar preferences are found, but different measurement methods and market segments across different study regions. It becomes obvious that the inclusion of socio-economic environment is more common than the representation of the built environment due to the availability in census data.
Various studies in the field of Urban Planning and Design have given recommendations on "good urban form", suggesting that specific spatial characteristics inform the quality of an urban landscape and the way persons perceive it, respectively behave in it. This demonstrates the need to reflect such spatial characteristics through quantitative attributes when modeling spatial behavior in form of location choice.
The options to characterize the urban morphology with such attributes are numerious and leave the researcher with the question which attributes are necessary to reflect characteristics of the urban morphology and how these can be calculated from the given data. In this thesis this question is approached by giving an overview of quantitative descriptions of the urban morphology. The basis is a data model that is simple enough to allow the reproducibility in any study area. These attributes are classified in multiple scales to reflect different perceptions of the urban morphology, i.e. the object, the composition, the neighborhood and the municipality. A case study of the canton of Zurich furthermore shows how these characteristics allow for definition of urban typologies for the proposed scales. Three cluster algorithms are applied to define such typologies: kmeans, kmedoid and latent class clustering. The cluster results are compared on their descriptive statistics, their consistency for different number of clusters, their spatial distribution and their interpretation in maps. The final part of the thesis evaluates the impact of the proposed variables on residential location choice for the Canton of Zurich: first the standard set of variables of the review, then the newly proposed morphological attributes and cluster outcomes. The standard set of variables proves to be of high value as initial setup for residential location choice models, but a comparable model quality is found for the alternative model definitions with morphological attributes, which furthermore give the a better feedback on planning policies. The low number of observations in the survey does not allow dedicated models for different household types, but the descriptive analysis given at the end of the thesis show a variation of preferences which recommends such modeling in further studies.2

Titel: The role of location in residential location choice models
Untertitel: A review of literature
Kurzbeschreibung: Geospatial data available to researchers has increased tremendously over the last several decades, opening up opportunities to define residential location in multiple ways. This has led to a myriad of variables to define "location'' in residential location choice models. In this paper, we propose a common classification for location variables and categorize findings from a wide range of studies. We find similar preferences but different measurement methods and market segments for locations across different study regions. Recent studies consider the residential unit as choice alternative, making it possible to include a detailed description of the built environment. However, these studies are still limited in number and the inclusion of socioeconomic environment is more common. Transport land-use models can benefit from the inclusion of points of interest, such as schools, network distances, and the distance to previous locations. For the results of location choice models to be transferable to different disciplines, and avoid multi-collinearity, it is necessary to present different model specifications, including variables of interest in different disciplines.2

Titel: Measuring Location in Residential Location Choice: An Empirical Study on the Canton of Zurich
Kurzbeschreibung: In transportation and land-use research, discrete choice models have become a common method for assessing the value or utility of discrete alternatives for an individual choice-maker and have led to the simulation of land-use developments on a microscopic level. Discrete location choice models represent relocation behavior in those simulations and generally implement three groups of variables, representing attributes of the alternative, the decision-taker and the location. With the growing availability of spatial data on a disaggregated level, a large number of location variables have been reported in these models, which reduces their comparability and their transferability to other study areas. To address this limitation, Schirmer et al. (2012) classified location variables and proposed a common set of attributes as an initial setup. In this paper, we explore the impact of these attributes on residential location choice in the Canton of Zurich.2

Titel: Shape Grammars in der Stadtplanung
Untertitel: Ein Erfahrungsbericht

Titel: Towards comparability in residential location choice modeling - a review of literature
Kurzbeschreibung: With the availability of disaggregated spatial data, residential location choice models have become more and more diverse in the hypothesis tested. This reduces the comparability of the main findings in different studies, although one might expect a comparable human behavior for comparable study areas. In the paper we review recent literature of the residential location choice models on a disaggregated level, in order to conclude in a set of variables recommended for use in models and simulations.

Titel: Wohnstandortwahl im Grossraum Zürich
Untertitel: Choice Set Sampling

Titel: Reviewing measurements in residential location choice models
Kurzbeschreibung: With the increase of the availability of disaggregated data, the modelling of residential location choices on a disaggregated level, has recently gained more and more popularity. All of these studies report on a variety of methodological approaches, but ignore a systematic selection of the variables to include.
Within the project SustainCity (www.SustainCity.org) an integrated land use transport simulation environment is being set up for the study areas of Paris, Brussels and Zurich. The implementation of location models into this simulation is limited through the data model of the simulation software. In order to understand these limitations we want to explore the objects and attributes that commonly have proved to be of relevance to residential location choice models.
In this paper we explore this topic and compare the variables that have been reported in recent literature of disaggregated residential location choice. The focus shall be an overview of the main findings, to understand common behaviour, and what therefore is necessary to represent in the data structure of urban simulation.

Titel: Using shape grammars as a rule based approach in urban planning
Untertitel: A report on practice
Kurzbeschreibung: With the development of user friendly software, using procedural shape grammars has become productive for urban planning projects. Little about the experience of their use by architects and urban planning agencies has been reported yet. This paper will thus discuss experience gained with the use of shape grammars in the projects of KCAP. We will show how the different scales of urban planning and urban design can be handled and how design concepts can be integrated into the procedural "pipeline" using the software "CityEngine". We will also present an approach of "typological testing" that allows to test various design concepts for their possible developments. This work is the base for current research at ETH, integrating geometric aspects into behavioural simulation processes of urban simulation.

Titel: Location choice in the greater Zurich Area
Untertitel: An intermediate report
Kurzbeschreibung: The residential location choice constrains the household. It defines the lifestyle through the costs of the apartment and the associated mobility-modes. The location of the residence also defines the accessibility, the surrounding opportunities and thus the leisure- and social behaviour of a household. The EU project SustainCity will implement the land use model UrbanSim. A central part of this model is the residential location choice of households. UrbanSim allows modelling this one with the available data and calibrates it for the study area. For this purpose a survey on 5000 households having recently moved within the Canton of Zurich, was conducted at the end of 2010. The survey asked for attributes of the location, attributes of the current and the previous residential location, as well as aspects of the social networks and attitudes of lifestyle. Belart (2011) provides a first attempt to examine the resulting 1100 responses with the help of discrete choice models. This paper will report on these results and describe the work currently in process to extend the analyses of this survey.2

Titel: Options and constraints of a parcel based approach in 'UrbanSimE'
Kurzbeschreibung: UrbanSim has done the step from a partly aggregated gridcell-based simulation to a fully disaggregated simulation model. Progress in computer graphics techniques (e.g. procedural modeling) and the integration of geometries as basis for simulation allows an outlook to new options deriving by combining those two approaches.
The disaggregated approach of UrbanSim in the parcel version is currently being tested within the Zurich case study of the SustainCity Project. A previous study has already been using the gridcell version of UrbanSim on Zurich. This project will thus allow the comparison of the results, but also the preparatory work needed to run the model.
This paper will concentrate on the parcel-based version of UrbanSim and is structured in two main parts. The chapter "data" will report on the experiences while trying to gather data for running UrbanSim on Zurich. Patterson (2010) and Löchl (2007) have been discussing the work that has to be done on the data (for running UrbanSim in the gridcell version), nevertheless no one is describing where to get those data and what costs need to be implemented. As the data required for the parcel version is more detailed then the ones needed in the gridcell version, this becomes an essential aspect of the work with UrbanSim. Furthermore the paper will discuss the content of data, data owners, that need to be contacted, as well as the need of UrbanSim in the parcel version.
The chapter "simulations and visualisations" will explore for new options deriving by integrating the parcels and the buildings into the simulation process of UrbanSim. Progresses and interests that are arising for procedural modelling will allow to link those geometric rules and behavioural rules as used in UrbanSim within the simulation process. This first outlook will discuss urban growing scenarios in form of Urban sprawl and Urban transformation and link to the tools that can be used to implement those into the simulation process. Finally a concept of a typological approach being part of urban transformation will be presented and discussed.
