Titel: Predicting response rates updated
Kurzbeschreibung: This note updates the first detailed analysis of response burden and response rates reported in Axhausen and Weis (2010). It also updates the rating of stated choice experiments. The analysis of the richer data set shows that the drop in response rate is proportional to the length and complexity of the questionnaire and gives first formulae to predict the response rates.2

Titel: Post-Car World: Survey Methods and Response Behavior in the Pre-Test
Kurzbeschreibung: The investigation of temporal rhythms in activity scheduling, the reshaping in time organisation and mobility tool ownership in combination with improvements in communication and transportation technology play a key role in understanding travel behaviour in a world with restricted car ownership and usage. The empirical basis of this comprehensive three-stage survey is a two-week travel diary that is required to obtain the reference values for the later stated choice and stated adaptation tasks. This paper provides first detailed information about the survey design, recruitment and pre-test fieldwork of this study. An initial investigation of the data and its quality attributes, descriptions of the sampling structure and response behavior are presented. Due to the high response burden and complexity of tasks, this quality check is crucial for improving the later recruitment and survey process.
A high incentive level leads to a significantly higher participation rate, but the net-effect on completing the survey is zero: Once recruited, higher incentives even lead to positive dropout effects. Certain socio-demographic characteristics are consistently overrepresented for the participation and drop-out groups: Season tickets ownership strongly affects participation and completion of the survey, while motorized vehicle ownership positively affects drop-out probability. Findings suggest saliency effects, where response behavior seems to be heavily influenced by the respondents' interest in the Post-Car World topic. While general fatigue effects could not be revealed in this pre-test study, public transport users exhibit a stabler reporting behavior over time than non-public transport users.2

Titel: Explaining Mode Choice, Taste Heterogeneity and Cost Sensitivity in a Post-Car World
Kurzbeschreibung: This paper analyzes mode choice behavior in a hypothetical future market situation offering innovative mode alternatives - car sharing, carpooling, public transport, taxi, walk and bike, but excluding private cars - and exploring behavioral reactions to changes in different attributes for 52 pre-test respondents (413 choice observations): A factor analysis revealed three latent variables that entered the choice models together with alternative-specific mode attributes and socio-economic characteristics. Results show a large heterogeneity in cost sensitivity, decreasing substantially with higher income. Vehicle owners having conservative and car loving attitudes choose car sharing more frequently relative to public transport and exhibit increased travel cost sensitivity, arguing that disrupting habitual travel behavior may change car users' perception of choice attributes. On the other hand, season ticket owners exhibiting positive attitudes towards public means of transport 'stick' to this mode and also show a lower travel cost sensitivity. Environmental awareness is linked with a general preference for both car sharing and carpooling. This could either suggest that these modes are perceived as convenient and eco-friendly, or that choice behavior is biased by strategic concerns in order to promote these new modes. Mode-specific values of travel time savings are clearly distinct: For car pooling, values are higher than for public transport, while car sharing travel time is valued substantially lower. Verification of the presented results as well as the implementation of refined modeling approaches will be reconsidered as sample size increases.2

Titel: Testing Efficient Stated Choice Designs
Kurzbeschreibung: Five D-e cient Stated Choice designs are created and tested for their reliability and precision in parameter estimates and value of time (VOT) calculations for a specific mode choice example. The designs are tested based on RP data and choice simulations, which is repeated 2000 times in order to get insights into deviations from the predefined a-priori parameters. A significant e ciency gain in standard errors due to the exclusion of dominant value of time alternatives or the application of MNL designs cannot be found, and the e cient GLM approach with further design conditions solves the design problem very satisfying. All five designs show good performance in estimating the parameters and accurately reproduce the a-priori values which are of special interest: The values of time.2
